Whitby Art website updated at last!
I’ve finally taken a liitle time to update my www.whitby-art.co.uk I haven’t bothered with it for a couple of months because even though the website was actually put on the Internet at the back end of last year mostly as a hobby activity, I never really expected it to be megabucks business, I mean at the end of the day it’s only about Whitby and nowhere else.
It all started by accident because a gentleman called John Trueman pulled up outside my house last October to enquire about my holiday cottage in Whitby. The slightly bizarre thing is that this gentleman had actually decorated my house about 26 years ago, a few years before I moved in 1989. When we got talking about our mutual passion for Whitby he went on to explain how he was also an artist and had many oil paintings and watercolours of that area, and he wanted to reproduce some of them on printed canvas and strangely enough only two weeks earlier I had splashed out and bought a large format printer which can produce canvases up to 60 inch wide!
Anyway one thing led to another and I decided I put a small website or to display his original oil and watercolour artwork and if anybody wanted the low-cost version they could buy box canvas print also.
But then there was a little problem which shall explain because it might help other people to realise you’ve got to be very careful that you are 100% sure of the source of any images you use on the Internet.
I have a Facebook page which is called www.facebook.com/whitbyfans and it’s quite a lot of fun there is the weekly guest Whitby picture competition which is run by Sheila she does an excellent job and there is a small community of nice people who just love Whitby.
So I thought it would be great fun to start the competition for the best Whitby photograph and basically it did actually at its heat get quite a lot of people sending in their favourite photographs, so I asked a few people if I could use their photographs on the new website. In fact one particular lady was so good I spoke to on the mobile and featured her pictures prominently in the little video I produced of the best photographs, which is at the bottom of this e-mail and we were actually going to team up together and put her pictures on the website with a receiving a small commission.
But this is where things go a little wrong unfortunately a couple of the photographs which to Facebook turned out to be not owned by the people who sent them and when I featured on the website and I did get two photographers upset with me and I can understand where they were coming from, even though I’d never sold any of their pictures. Anyway basically this caused me to think I’m not bothering with the website is really only a hobby which I’ wanted to enjoy etc
I’m going to put an original artwork of the actor Sir Roger Moore, whom I have the pleasure in his Web manager http://roger-moore.com/ Roger is a UNICEF special ambassador which gives me a lot of pleasure thinking I’m helping a little in very small way by promoting his work for the charity on his official website, but I talked to EON productions who won the rights to James Bond, I don’t want to cause any problem again.
Anyway the weather’s nice at the moment and I took some pictures in Whitby last week and I thought well I’ll pop a few on when I’ve got time, but I’m going to make sure I only use my old photographs or ones when I know for sure the actual owners.
I think the best thing that came out of buying the printer is the it’s great fun, I’m enjoying studying and messing about with Photoshop and at the moment, I’m trying to perfect repairing old photographs of family, it’s really great trying to get the old shots back to perfection. The only problem is hobbies like this especially in the beginning sucks time like an enormous black hole, I am hours on the laptop and all of a sudden my commitments are piling up.. that’s life
If you are interested this is the new Facebook page to coincide with the website www.facebook.com/whitbyart
And this is the website I will be updating periodically www.whitby-art.co.uk with more oil paintings watercolours, picturesw ith box canvas prints of them also.
And if you’re a Whitby nut like me, if you join the Facebook Art page or subscribe to the mailing on the actual website etc, when a new picture or painting is published you will get a little message with the picture attached, I wouldn’t worry no one will bombarded and don’t forget Whitby fans on Facebook Sheila wants more people getting the right answer each week to the picture competition. http://www.facebook.com/whitbyfans
PS I’ve just noticed I’ve got well over 40 people have sent replies to this blog and I have not answered any of them, there are some very interesting ones but stupid me forgot to look at the messageI keep forgetting that WordPress lets people write comments back..! Anyway thank you for the very interesting replies, I’ve just skimmed and I will reply to them all as soon as I got a little time this week.
This was a little video I put on for the competition on Facebook last December
