I have a Whitby holiday cottage, but the only problem is it is virtually never empty all year round and we even that to stay in other accommodation three times last year when staying in Whitby.
So today there was a one night between bookings and it was even better still a Sunday so, I decided I would do dash to Whitby and see if there was any jobs that needed doing.

I was lucky on two counts, firstly it’s been a glorious day and secondly I never even realised it was Whitby Goths weekend ! There’s two Goth weekend’s one at the beginning of the season and one at the end of October and this is the first time I have managed to be there and it was fantastic. It’s absolutely amazing the amount of effort in detail people of all age groups go to dress up in their finery, it’s really surprising you get people in their 80s all togged out and raring to go.
I was walking through the extremely busy streets I suddenly thought the best location to take pictures of Goths would be obviously by the Abbey or St Mary’s Church where you’re not surrounded by hordes of people in the tiny cobbled streets, and there was more of a chance of a nice backdrop to any pictures I might take.
It couldn’t turned out better in aware there was lots of Goths up there and a little crowd of photographers all with professional looking cameras with extreme long lenses.. Do you think the length of their lens is a phallic symbol?…my lens was virtually not visible with my very unprofessional camera ! but I’ll get over it after all it’s not always size that matters. The guys with the long lenses seem to have monopolised a few of the Goth models, but I muscled, got chatting and took a few nice photographs I believe.
When I came down from St Mary’s I was walking down the cobbled Church Street, and it’s amazing you get Goths of all age groups, some of them looked to be in their 80s. Just as I got to the Market Square a little old chap hunched over shuffling along with his lady friend, I couldn’t resist asking if they would have a photograph taken they looked so cute.
I don’t think I would ever put on the long black coat and boots, I remember a few years ago when I was an extra in a program called Macabre which was starring David Jason, I was a long black trench coat and top hat much to hysterical laughter of the other extras, because I’m 6 foot tall with long tall hat on the Isle said I looked like the Grim Reaper!
I remember on that particular program at the end of the day shooting one of the guys was stood in a changing tent in a field, trying to remove his tight mediaeval looking trousers, when he caught his boot in the waistband and went flying through the tent into the field and hysterical laughter was refocused on him sat in the mud with his underpants.
I also once remember walking across a bridge in the centre of York with Pauline about the same time and I had my own black long overcoat, when a bunch of kids starting laughing pointing at me saying here comes the Grim Reaper, so I think I better stick to the usual everyday clobber.
They look cute
