My new business venture to set up a small Whitby holiday letting agency, which is more closely connected to its clients and customers, giving them a better service to both.
I have had a Whitby holiday cottage and over the last three years
Which I have been able to let it out almost solidly all year, but one of the most mind blowing things to me is that when you look at all the other Whitby cottages in Whitby, they tend to get their customers from letting agencies and I have noticed that the vast majority are lucky if they can achieve 50% occupancy rate throughout the year.
It sounds like I’m being boastful when I say I almost managed to book it out my cottage completely throughout the entire year, but I’m not showing off, it’s just I’ve worked hard on search engine optimisation all the way through since buying it, because I couldn’t really afford to have the place empty for long periods.
Anyway regarding my new venture, the reason I say small is not through lack of ambition, but because I’m aiming to have a less clients but to give each one more personal attention and better service, which will hopefully produce them higher occupancy rates for them than if they’d chosen a large more impersonal larger agency.
To be perfectly honest I been running my CCTV installation and security alarms business since 1984 and I really want to make a change to my working life to do something I’ve really enjoyed doing.
I’m sure that if I could change completely to become a Whitby letting agency it would be perfect because I love the place and would really enjoy placing people in lovely accommodation for their holiday.

Small numbers of people with accommodation have contacted me wanting me to get them bookings but I didn’t try, I wasn’t ready to devote my time to it properly.One of the first ones to contact me was a nice gentleman called Richard who has a lovely little Whitby holiday cottage of Church Street in Whitby, which is one of the prime locations in the old part of town. www.whitby-holiday-cottage.com
At the moment of writing this, It’s literally about five days since I launched Richards new cottage website which was designed by Mark for me and I have been promoting a over the Internet from my various websites. The first indications are quite good, there has been one weeks holiday booked two short breaks so far.
Richard bought the cottage over 20 years ago and so doesn’t have a mortgage for either one, so there’s been no real urgency for him to obtain bookings, he also runs a gardening centre business near to Whitby.
Last year Richard had very low bookings from a very well-known big agency and when I told him the level of business I turned over he was amazed, but like everything else this only happened because I worked in marketing the place on the Internet constantly.
I’m now pushing to promote Richards cottage also and hopefully this will be the first one of a few more carefully selected nice properties with nice owners that I can represent.
In today’s world everything seems to be such big business, we don’t go to small shops any more, we go to large supermarket chains, when we get insurance for our cars we go online or talk to an automated switchboard of a large insurance company etc But I want my customers when they book their Whitby holiday accommodation, to be able to speak to a real person, who knows intimately all aspects of each property, making sure they get exactly what they want from their Whitby holiday cottages.
I’ll pass comment how the project goes on in the future, and tell you truthfully if it’s been a success or not.
