We have a local artist in Bradford called Bob Barker over recent years has become very popular and sought after being taken under the wing of the very prominent gallery Washington Green.

I bought some one of Bob’s paintings about two years with my favourite is called Peace and Quiet and it is very imposing parley due to its size 48″ x 48″. Bob Barker often paints scenes of a bygone area with bucket loads of quaintness and atmosphere. The magnificent vivid colour which the artist uses always makes the artwork very impacting. Obviously we all have our favourites but he is one of mine.

Recently I was in the right place at the right time when I bought from a local shop an absolute gem, a watercolour which absolutely grabbed me. At the time I had never heard of the artist, and all I knew is what I was told in the shop on the day of buying. The painting is called “Whitby Gossips” and it shows the old cottages in an area that still there called Tate Hill in Whitby, with traditional fishermen, women and children in the scene dressed in old-fashioned shawls etc which at the time of painting were in fashion :-)

It was painted by Thomas Swift Hutton who was born in 1860, and it was easy to find out more information about Thomas on the Internet because he became successful quite quickly and his art is now exhibited in various galleries up and down the country. Thomas was a very young being only 27 when he got his first exhibition at The Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, with is his artwork now being much sought after. It was painted approximately 120 years ago when Thomas was working prominently in the Whitby area, and it certainly set my imagination going. What kind of day was that when Thomas was painting the scene and what were the people experiencing that gave him the inspiration as they scurry past him in their struggle to survive in this harsh Whitby fishing village. And last but not least what were the women gossiping about?

Unlike a photograph piece of artwork really gives the artist a great scope to put his feelings and emotions into the brush strokes and shades which evoke emotion and feelings.

It might sound silly but I feel like I’m holding a piece of history, a moment in time as seen and felt through the eyes of an individual artist. I even like the fact that Thomas signed his name on the front and then also in large letters on the back with the title “Whitby Gossips”, I bet he was pleased with his artwork it certainly will have given many people pleasure over the years.

It’s inspired me so much I started my own online art gallery, which is prominently be artwork around Whitby and surrounding area. I’m particularly looking for original artwork and I’m sure this is going to be an absolute pleasure to be involved in. Whitby Art
