9900 looking but not for me !
One of the reasons that Whitby is so popular nowadays is that it has a very healthy schedule of events which occur during the summer months. This has been building up over the years and now there’s something happening nearly every single weekend to attracting tourists. That’s great but it’s strange that if you try and find out what’s happening at the weekend in Whitby it takes quite a bit of hunting down the facts even on the Internet!
I get e-mails from my Whitby holiday cottage website asking me when is the Whitby regatta, or when is the Whitby folk week etc and so I thought I’ll take a little look into how this can be improved. Firstly because I’m into Search Engine Optimisation I went to my keyword tool which is very interesting to me and even if you’re not into Internet marketing it’s still quite fascinating because it basically tells you how many people searched for combinations of words last month on Google in this country and globally if you wish.
One of the first things I found was that I thought most people would type in the two words “Whitby events” but this had a reasonable number of people looking at 1900 in the UK in April 2010. But to put this in perspective this is known as a “broad” match, which means that any small sentence in a website with those two words like “Whitby regatta events” would come up as a result. If you go to the “exact” term (Whitby events) it was 62 in the UK and 240 globally. But after some research there was one two word combination that took the crown for what people search for when they’re trying to find out what’s happening in Whitby over the coming weeks and this is your chance to have a little guest before reading my findings.
It was in “Whitby weekend” which had a whopping 22,200 people searching in April 2010 on the broad matched in the UK and 170 on the actual singular word.
When you look for a search term the more words the less people have used them in Google search engine, because basically I guess people are generally a little lazy and so a one word search always gets much more results than a two word search and two word search gets more searches usually done a three word search etc.
So to finish this article off I want you to guess how many people have searched the singular word Whitby in April 2010
The answer is 1,830,000 almost two million WOW, so when I searched for the actual singular word search this was typed into Google in April 2010 40,200 times in the UK and 70,400 times globally, so it’s still quite a lot .
I’ve now set the page of my holiday cottage website and optimised it to the words “Whitby weekend” and then set about a campaign to make the webpage hopefully goes to the top of Google search engines and on page one as quickly as possible. So with a little bit of luck and management a lot of people should be up to get a comprehensive list of what’s happening in Whitby and when a summer’s day typing their favourite to search terms for this subject and we all know what those are now
Whitby Weekend
I managed the website for the actor Sir Roger Moore http://www.roger-moore.com/ who is now a UNICEF ambassador so I thought I would a check to see many people were searching for him and it was quite a lot across the globe !
So I thought I’d go on an ego trip and type my name into the search engine word tool and guess what… 4400 people in the UK have searched and globally ON THE BROAD MATCH TEARM 9900 for Alan Davidson, YES !!!!! …… the only problem is I can bet none of them were searching for me! They were probably looking for a famous cricketer with my name from the past or a well-known photographer in London who also shares my name.
Basically nobody was looking for little old me…. but my cat still loves me! CU Alan
PS If there’s any events in Whitby that you would like to add to the “Whitby Weekend” page at any time please just let me know.
