Robert S Baker a gentleman.
I was about to write my blog about the final chapter on my great rubbish get rid of escapade and then I thought back over my previous blogs and thought, oh my god there is just too much of this mundane subject matter, but unfortunately it is my recent reality so here goes…
The fact is that I have once again been loading up my trailer with old CCTV and security alarm equipment but it’s the last time I will ever let it escalate to this amount of work where I have to spend days shifting its all. During this highly un enjoyable task, there was one unexpected highlight, which once again came from Joe public scavenging but this time not from grown-ups but from children!
I was in the middle of the grind when all of a sudden four little ragamuffin urchins approached (three boys and one girl all aged about 10 ) and they enthusiastically asked if they could help in exchange for being allowed to keep cable which was strewn and interwoven with all the rubbish, which was not this time in the cellar but the over spill in my double garage.
My first feelings regarding the children was I didn’t want them in the way, but they actually had quite charming little faces and characters and after I’d exchange some humorous banter with them I changed my mind. They were being very helpful and rather sweet and I also felt sorry for them, because they obviously didn’t come from well-off backgrounds so if they could make a little money out of the scrap that was fine by me.
So we as a group proceeded to pile things into the box trailer with me supervising to make sure that the odd diamond in the rough, in other words a mistakenly thrown out camera that was new etc was being kept to one side. All the time the children were pulling things out and putting them in two old Morrison baskets they had brought with them. After awhile we collectively finished and it was time for me to leave for a local tip, pulling my heavy load. As I drove away the kids were obviously pleased with their booty and they all waved and shouted “ Thank you Mr” with beaming faces. The following day the little girl with the tomboyish character, ran over to me and said with great excitement “ we made £35, thank you Mr” she had a beautiful smile and I was truly pleased to them.
So that’s my last story on rubbish for the time being… thank goodness! But just to finished this little blog entry off with a more glamorous finish, I’m just getting to grips with my new HD camcorder, they are absolutely amazing nowadays. I’m hoping I might be able to use it next Sunday, because I am very honoured to have been invited to Pinewood Studios, where Sir Roger Moore is holding a celebration for the life of his friend and business partner Robert S Baker, who sadly passed away a few months back. Mr Baker was a producer and director and in 1961 offered the role of The Saint to Roger, which went on to make Roger one of the biggest stars on television. Bob Baker was also was the creator of the series The Persuaders, one of my personal favourites. I had the privilege of meeting Mr Baker on two occasions and interviewing him a few years back on the telephone and I will be putting this on You Tube in his honour soon.
I’ve not been given permission to film anything but if I am allowed I’m sure it will be of great interest to Sir Roger Moore fans and also I hope in my small way to celebrate and thank Bob Baker for all the pleasure he gave me and many other people with his fine excellent large body of TV programmes and films. This gentleman definitely was not well known to the public in the same way as an actor/director Sir Roger Moore but there is no doubt his contribution was no less. More on this story to come…
This is the story of Sir Roger Moore receiving his blue plaque for his contribution to Elstree Studios in the series The Saint. With contributions from his friend Bob Baker.
