When working I tend to chatter on more than I should, talking and not working!
But I enjoy it and I doubt I will stop at my age, it’s become a way of life.
This morning I was managing to multitask (who says men cannot do this?) I was chatting while repairing a security alarm in a private house. The customer was a lady in a mid-30s with a rather serious persona, she had a very nervous tone to a voice, and she tended to look at everything very seriously and with extreme importance.
I asked her what she did for a living, to which she replied she was a nurse in Leeds Gen Hospital specialising in older people. This led the conversation to become even more sombre because she basically deals with old age, illness and death on a daily basis!
In fact it made me feel slightly guilty because just prior to that I had been having quite a few light-hearted jokes at the lady’s expense, not in a cruel way but just in an effort to lighten the atmosphere and if I’m honest also because I tend to find very serious people amusing. I can get a little bit silly. Example at one point she was looking in horror at the number twisted up wires that were protruding from a security alarm panel I was in the process of fixing , she had said in horror “do we have to leave all those wires in their”? to which I replied in a very serious way “no I’ll just trim a few out, have you got any particular colours you like me to remove”? Often people don’t know whether to believe you are not and I always find this amusing, then they realise as I laugh that I was only joking.
Let’s face it most of the things that people find so disturbing on a daily basis are not so important in reality, they’re trivial things we all blow out of proportion.
Anyway back to the serious conversation we had when I probed how long she’d been in this type of work, she went on to explain it was about 15 years and originally it used to get her down but now she leaves the problems of work at work and forgets about it when she goes home.
It just made me think how important this kind of work is that this lady does of course, but I couldn’t help thinking that if I was one of her patients maybe I would prefer a slightly more up-tempo optimistic type of character looking after me! Life can hard but we don’t always want to be reminded of that….
