Good old technology :-)
I used to read all types of psychology books when I was younger because I was always fascinated by the thought that the main thing that influences your life is how you think about everything.
You know the old question is the glass half empty or half-full? And the argument of what influences your life the most, nature versus nurture ? I personally think a bit of both so there’s nothing wrong with trying to nurture yourself a little, by reading more.
I also used to do something I think a lot of people are guilty of and that is focus on the bits which I wasn’t particularly good at in life and then to put myself down, whilst ignoring all the things I do which are reasonably good.
One particular psychologist I read was called Walter Staples an America who had spent years conducting studies into people’s varying intelligence. It’s not quite as simple as this but he came to a conclusion that the vast majority of people have a fairly equal regarding their personal intelligence is just that we are different in what we are good at.
So the trick is find out what you’re good at, enjoy and focus on that whilst not forget to diversify a little. Staples conclusion was it was possible to be the gray boring professor that only studies one particular subject extremely well and is fair enough an expert in this field, but then knows very little about anything else !
So with this kind of philosophy I’ve always felt that I can do most things if I apply myself, but sometimes I just don’t bother untill I have to :-)
Example my company http://www.adalarms.co.uk/ started in 1983 as electrical contractors and a few years later went into security alarm equipment installation and finally installing CCTV. The point is that I am not particularly machine person, I tend to like people more, which could be a termed a little counter-productive when you are a alarm engineer ! Well in actual fact it does work quite well because over the years, I’ve learnt most things about security alarms, so even though I might not be the best in the world I know enough. Combine this with employing people who are better than myself in this particular subject, I get good results.
So I tend to think of myself as a salesman who can repair most security alarms and CCTV which has become very sophisticated over resent years. One of its best new functions of CCTV is the ability to network cameras over the Internet, but I had managed to avoid studying the aspect of networking CCTV and paid for this to be completed by my engineers.
But sometimes there comes a time when you cannot avoid drinking from the fountain of knowledge. I was invited to a company who we buy some of our CCTV equipment from, for a guided tour of the factory and a full free day with their technician on the subject of networking. I did actually find it very interesting in a class of eight because teacher possessed a sense of humour, so the whole day was very informative and also good fun.
So now if I want to watch my CCTV cameras around my own property, or control my digital video recorder, or even move my tilt pan and zoom camera, I can do all this not just from the comfort of my laptop from wherever I may be in the world, but also from my mobile phone! All configured by my own fair hands for the first time.
Can you imagine the scenario, you’ve saved up for a luxurious holiday cruising down the Nile in Israel and you decide to login to your CCTV on your mobile phone and take a look at your front door from thousands of miles away just to make sure everything is fine, only to see Mr burglar with his jemmy bar and plying his trade to your front door! It could just possibly spoil your day a teeny-weeny bit! And then to rub salt in the wound the next thing that happens is your telephone speech dialler that’s been triggered by your security alarm rings you up, and you can hear your own voice recording telling you what I already know, your being burgled ! Good old technology ?
At least you could act as your own free monitoring station by phoning the police and your burglar chappie might get free board and logins at the local nick ….

Hi Alan,
I read your post and I like your sense of humor. Here is a thing you may want to offer to your clients, as reference or thru you.
smsVideoGuard.com watches the cctv camera feed for you, your client or anyone and for a dollar a day. This pricing and the kind of setup is not possible for others to model so easily.
I agree that having the service over the internet may have some difficulties but those are same as a alarm telephone line going dead.
So think about it and chat with the people on the website Real Security Guard for cctv @ $1/camera/day
Cheers
